Why I Want to Be Like Kevin Max -or- The Ravings of a True Fan

Ever since I was in high school, I’ve dreamed of being able to sing like Kevin Max. I used to (well, still do actually) buy every album he was on and spend hours singing along with him trying to match his amazing vocal range and artistic inflections. I even remember trying to make a deal with God one time that went something like “If you’ll give me a voice like Kevin’s I’ll do anything you ask, ANYTHING!” I’m still waiting to hear back on that one. And yes, I have his music playing in the background right now to set the mood as I write this. Actually, here’s one of his music videos (although this one is a few years old). You see, Kevin is my favorite singer from my favorite band when I was growing up called dcTalk. In fact, a little piece of me died when they announced they were a

Using Silence to Get Attention

A while ago, I asked you to share your most burning marketing questions with me in the comments of this post, and you all submitted some great questions. I was particularly intrigued with the question submitted by “Lazy Rockstar” which was… For the last few years the message has been, “You don’t need record companies. Artists will market themselves online and . . . (Cue: ‘Age of Aquarius’)” Now you have ten gazillion artist websites and everything you do gets lost in the noise. So, here’s the question, “How do you make ‘good’ noise’? – Lazy My answer? Don’t make any. Instead, draw attention to your silence. All of us are being constantly bombarded with advertising “noise” in every media you can imagine. It’s become so bad that it now follows you where ever you go

Bullshit Alert: Why “Design Doesn’t Matter” is Bad Advice

Don’t you just hate it when people give bad advice for their own profit? Recently there’s been quite a few articles popping up online that talk about how "design doesn’t matter," how it’s OK to have an ugly website, that content is the most important thing, or that designers are just trying to rip you off. I have one thing to say about that kind of advice: it’s bullshit. Let me tell you why. There’s been a lot of research done that proves the impact design has on sales. For example, did you know there’s a study that was done by a group of researchers in Canada that proves website visitors make a judgement about your site within the first 1/20th of a second? I don’t care how good your copy is or how usable the site is, if your site doesn’t capture the visitor’s attention in that fir

How to Inject Your Brand Into Your Writing

How far do you take your branding? Do you settle on a nice logo, catchy color scheme, a cool design, and call it good? Or do you immerse yourself completely in your brand like a truffle that’s coated in chocolate? The more you can immerse everything you do in your brand, the more effective it will be. But just how far can you take your branding, and is it even possible to brand more than just your marketing? Good question. Let’s look at your writing; something most people wouldn’t think about branding. Is it possible to brand your writing? Absolutely. Successful authors know that in order to make their writing interesting, they need to develop their own writing style or voice that is unique to them. And once they settle on a style, all of their writing uses it. To put i

Are You Ready for the Best Damn Ride of Your Life?

One of my favorite rock songs is Rev Theory’s “Hell Yeah” for a couple of reasons. First, it’s a full immersion, high-octane, rock ‘n roll, jam tune. This is one song you can crank up and rock out to anytime you want to get fired up. It’s exactly the type of fast paced, adrenaline pumping song that I love to listen to. Incidentally, I happen to play a wicked air guitar to this song and am an even meaner lip syncer. The second reason I love this song is because it’s the perfect business model. Say what? You heard me. “Hell Yeah” is the perfect business model. But before I get too deep into an explanation, here’s the music video so you can hear the song for yourself to better understand the rest of this post. NOTE: If you really want to get fired up about rocking your business, cr
